looking for pelicans

rumor had it that the pelicans were back along the river. Who would have thought there are pelicans in the midwest? R and I went to check the rumor out. tow and barge going down the river, I'm not sure if its the Mississippi or the Missouri. Alton is close to the confluence of both these rivers. the dam makes this a good place for eagles and pelicans to have easy hunting. We didn't see any pelicans or eagles. Our winter has been too too warm for them to be plentiful. Good thing is I've found a new place to photograph, there is a migratory bird preserve that I didn't know about

family tree

James J Ruth, my grandfather in his World War 1 uniform. He died when I was 8 so my memories of him are alittle fuzzy.

I've started research my family tree. Went to a meeting given by the "Daughters of the American Revolution" to find out how to get started. I can go back 4 generations with the material I already know. There are a few blanks I'd like to fill in and generally want to know where my family came from.

I've been a big fan of the tv show "Who do you think you are" and decided to make a better effort to do this research this year. I like to research so this should be right up my alley.

Photo above is my paternal grandparents (Margaret and Stephen Powers) with my aunt and my dad as a boy.

my mom and dad with their mothers on their wedding day. My grandma Ruth died when I was 12 so my memories of her are a little better. Grandma Powers died in 1981.

Books of January

first time I've read James Joyce some good saving tips downloaded to my nook by accident and since I can't not read what is on my nook I did read this get your box of tissues

Good, but depressing hope this isn't the truth, viewed the day a big solar flare hit the earth very good, kept my interest, just started reading James Patterson's novels

new family member 3

met Larry, the leopard lizard. D's aunt and uncle gave this to him as a birthday present. D loves all forms of creepy, crawly, slithering creatures. Mom said the worse thing is having live crickets in the fridge for Larry's meals!

B just turned 18, will be off to college in the fall

D just turned 5, he will be off to kindergarten in the fall

cooking class

the kids are taking a cooking class at the local community center.

L isn't waiting for the finished meal, she decided to help herself!

funny faced pizza on a tortilla, I had a bite and it was really good.

forget the pizza, let's eat the tortilla with marshmallows and chocolate chips.
